Bibliometric Analysis of Papers from the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, Indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection Database (2006–2022)

This paper presents the results of a bibliometric analysis of the scientific production of authors from the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection
database from 2006 to 2022. Material and methods: The sample consists of 1,521 papers analyzed according to parameters such as author’s address and affiliation, followed by productivity indicators
(document types, publication years, journals, languages, WoSCC subject categories, open access, authors, and co-authors) and citation metrics (citations, h-index, JCR quartiles, key topics), using WoSCC tools, InCites, VOSviewer, and Excel. Results: Most of the papers are categorized as articles (86%), while other document types account for 14%. The analysis has shown a continuous growth of scientific production during the observed period, and the publication of papers is concentrated in a small number of journals (5% of journals publish 53% of papers). Analyzing the representation of individual journals, the largest number of papers was published in Acta Stomatologica Croatica (20%), but overall, 59% of papers were published in journals of international publishers with a major increase in the number of papers in MDPI journals. The majority of papers (65%) are indexed in the WoSCC SCI-Expanded database. Since 2019, a significant shift towards publishing in higher-quality
JCR Q1 and Q2 journals has been observed, as well as an increase in the number of open access papers. A substantial number of papers are in some form of open access (44%), paid open access predominates (51%) and citations of open access papers account for 46%. The largest number of open access papers was published in the journal Acta Stomatologica Croatica (176; 27%). The largest number of papers (26%) involved collaboration among six authors per paper, which is also the average number of authors per paper. Papers resulting from international collaboration account for 27%, and within the School of Dental Medicine, teams of two to four authors collaborate most frequently. Citation analysis has shown that the selected papers received a total of 19,128 citations, with an average of 13 citations per paper, while the h-index is 53. Only 13% of the papers had no citations, and the highest number of citations is scattered across a large number of papers. Conclusion: Scientific output of authors from the School of Dental Medicine in the observed period is characterized by a continuous increase in the number of published papers and greater representation in higher-quality foreign scientific journals, stronger international collaboration, increased citation rates and significant adoption of open access publishing.
