Sažetak
After they formulated the party’s ideological direction, through their intellectual,
scientific and journalistic works, Antun and Stjepan Radić founded the
Croatian People’s Peasant Party, aiming at gathering the people around their
peasant nucleus and their common political projects. The Radić brothers
were compelled to hold the helm of their party structures tightly and find
their political footing amongst the obstacles that stood in their path, including
those set by their enemies and the electoral system. Those obstacles
stemmed from the unenviable position of Croatia in the Austro-Hungarian
Empire and the increase in international tensions. Antun Radić attempted to
expand his party and its influence in the Sabor, whilst remaining true to his
mission, namely that of a teacher of the people, always willing to explain to
the peasants the mechanics of the world that surrounded them. So Antun
Radić not only witnessed, but also participated in events during exceptionally
uncertain times. He expressed his own views on the consequences of the
Rijeka Resolution, the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the tensions
leading to the assassination in Sarajevo. Radić retreated from the public
arena during the First World War and returned to the public stage only
after the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, in
order to publish his last observations and analyses, which have the appearance
of a political testament.
