Sažetak

This paper presents research on the hospitality business in terms of transition. Hospitality is a specific activity, it produces services, and processes of economic transition introduce a "double anxiety" in this trade. On the one hand, top quality service with an average price and business excellence are required, on the other hand the realization conditions are extremely complex. Change and transformation can not be implemented fast enough, and the economic business model requires competitiveness and dynamic capabilities. In such circumstances, structural disproportions grow and economic game gets stuck on the issue of sustainable implementation (both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality). Research model for research activities and structural relationships is defined and methodology is presented. The basic parameters of research on performance of hospitality industry in the transitional countries are mostly based on natural indicators. Presented are the results of empirical research on the example of hospitality industry in the Republic of Croatia. It is shown that regardless of transition conditions, there is an increase in the quantity field in the sector, but they lack an increase in quality. Obviously an extremely fast transformation of ownership and management as well as structural adjustment cannot be realized; neither can psychological adjustment of former management of social ownership be easily conducted, as it is a continuous process. Hospitality activity essentially depends on the state economic policy. This is an industry that is very sensitive to the issue of quality and one which is usually a necessary condition for the realization of indirect effects, which are emphasized in the receptive economy by a world mega-trend - tourism. The state has to acknowledge the fact and adapt its economic policy to this phenomenon.
