Somatic Health Status of Individuals with High Intellectual Abilities

The long-standing interest for the relation between human somatic and mental functions has prompted different empirical investigations and corresponding analyses with the aim of shedding light on the nature of this relationship. This paper presents the results of several such research-analytic programmes, regarding the relationship between human somatic and mental functions in intellectually gifted individuals (predominantly children and adolescents). Somatotypes,
general health condition and conative abnormalities were used as
the most frequent indicators of the somatic-health status, whereas the IQ was observed as the usual representative of intellectual abilities.
The data were taken from several longitudinal studies of the development of intellectually gifted individuals in a dozen of research projects that observed particular organic processes, such as EEG activity in the cerebral cortex and functions of the endocrine system, and also some pathological states, such as depression, anorexia neurosa, suicidal tendencies, delinquency and other abnormalities.
Although the obtained findings are not quite equivalent, the results pointed out to certain significant differences between intellectually gifted and intellectually average individuals in these variables. Besides important theoretical knowlege, the findings also give a pragmatic message: intellectually gifted persons (especially such children and adolescents) are an extremely vulnerable group in their conative sphere. Consequently, preventative educational measures are necessary in order to avoid, or at least to mitigate, potential deviations in this area.
