Abstract

The author gives a historical overview of ports in the Lower Neretva area with special emphasis on traffic and geographic development of the port of Metković. Port of Metković, which is a river port but also a seaport, is the successor to the former ports of Neretva, Narona and Drijeva, but at the same time it is the predecessor of the modern port of Ploce. All ports in the area of Neretva were formed mainly due to gravity of Bosnia and Herzegovina towards them. Bosnia and Herzegovina has an exit to the sea through the valley of the River Neretva which is a natural link between the inland and the coast. This paper describes the periods of progress and setbacks of the Port of Metković as well as the causes. Advantages and possibilities of the port of Metković within the port of Ploce are pointed out, due to the huge investment in transport infrastructure in the immediate area where the corridor Vc is of vital importance.
