The esthetic horizon of Mirko Bogović

Sažetak

Although the middle of the 19th century in Croatia has been less studied than some other periods, it was not a time of total cultural stagnation as it would seem to be according to many conventional but unsupported statements. In addition to many new elements, the time is marked by the persistence of the complex formation of »romantic classicism, then in its final phase. Mid-century cultural activities tend towards new artistic, ideological and political orientations, but with a clear presence of tradition. One active writer of the period, particularly the 1850's, was Mirko Bogović (1816-1896). Primarily he is known as the editor of the periodical Neven and the author of three dramas - Frankopan, Matija Gubec and Stjepan, the Last King of Bosnia. He did not produce any methodical esthetic treatse, but he was among those who were conscious of the function, necessity and inevitability of esthetic reflection. The goal of this study is to describe the type, modalities and horizon of Bogović's esthetic reflections. Though occasionally naive, they are interesting, particularly in polemics and discussions on the problems and functions of the theatre, where Bogović referred to Schiller and many other German and also French authors.
