Sažetak

The period from piglet birth to weaning is the most sensitive phase in the pig production cycle. During this period, piglets are exposed to many stressors, which negative consequences may affect subsequent production phases. Stress can occur because of separation of piglets from mothers, mixing of piglets from different litters, change of environment in which piglets are kept, as well as because of changes in feed type, feed quantity and ways of consumption. Factors that have negative influence on feed and water consumption before and after weaning are high or low environment temperature, inability to differ feelings of hunger and thirst, inability to find feed or water, lack of experience in consuming feed or water, competitive behaviour among piglets from different litters, lack of feeding stimulation, availability of feed and water, excessive consumption of water, and water temperature and quality. Proper feeding management, adequate microclimatic parameters and adequate technological and technical solutions at the farm may diminish effects of these factors. Successful prevention of occurrence of these factors depends on reduced dependence of piglets on mothers and on possibilities to develop investigative behaviour of piglets. It is necessary to develop feeding habits in piglets and to feed them high quality food. Environment temperature in which piglets are kept is one of the most important microclimatic parameters. If the temperature is higher or lower than of determined values, feed consumption will be reduced. Technological and technical solutions that should be respected are related to construction of pens, access to water, and number of feeding sites. Weight of piglets at weaning is the major factor, which responses to stressful conditions depend on. The goal is to get piglets with higher weight in order to avoid decrease of growth in the first week after weaning and to utilize piglets genetic growth potential.
