Sažetak
The subject of this paper is planning of and creating a syllabus for music
classes in the first three grades of elementary school. Teaching is a complex social
activity involving upbringing and education of young generations in their developmental
age. Its success largely depends on the quality of teachers’ preparation. The
preparation of teachers is defined as a permanent process occurring simultaneously
with class work. Lifelong learning, i.e. continuous improvement, is essential for the
successful preparation of teachers. There are several types of preparation: annual,
monthly, weekly and daily.
A research was conducted for the purpose of this paper, whose goal was to determine
how primary education teachers approach planning of and making a syllabus for music
classes in the first three grades of elementary school. The research has established
that teachers approach lesson planning thoroughly, because in addition to textbooks,
manuals and curriculum, they also use additional literature, selected mostly according
to students’ interests and because the open nature of the music class model itself offers
teachers the freedom in the selection of content. We have also learned that teachers
feel overwhelmed by writing daily preparations for class. What is surprising,
however, is the fact that none of the teachers from our research uses an instrument in
teaching music, which can be ascribed to the lack of their competence. Therefore,
teachers should attempt to take part in continuous training in order to keep pace with
innovations in teaching and to provide students with quality education.
