PISNI DUHOVNE (SPIRITUAL TUNES): ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL TUNES OF TOMO BABI Ć AND JURAJ MULIH
Ennio STIPČEVIĆ
Sažetak
It is rather well known that during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the Croatian spiritual tunes (Kirchenlied) and religious folk-songs (geistliches Volkslied) played an important social role that surmounted their initial spiritual purpose. Therefore, in this article author analyses these spiritual tunes from the beginning of the eighteenth century; especially those that were written by Tomo Babić and Juraj Mulih. In this analysis the em-phasis is on the musicological aspect, as well as on the broader context of the Franciscan and Jesuits’ baroque. Babić ’s tunes are published in his popular book Cvit razlika mirisa duhovnoga [The fl ower of the distinct spiritual scent] (1726). Though this work had more than seven publications up to the end of the nineteenth century, the most of these tunes are rarely connected with Babić ’s name. By the same token, Mulih also composed many spiritual tunes. The collection of his work today is lost, though it is known that the title was Laudes Dei and that was written in 1749. However, some of the tunes are known and attributed to him, so one can analyse and value his style. Their work can be contextualised with the work of Franciscans and Jesuits of the pe-riod, who also tended to write down popular vernacular tradition. Furthermore, it can be noticed that these monastic orders also tried to unify and institutionalise this musical tradition, attempting at the same time to exclude all the »pagan« and »lascivious« texts, altering them into spiritual and religious milieu. These tunes were intended for a broader folk audience, and they carried clear and simple spiritual message. Since the fi rst half of the eighteenth century is marked with the process of renouncing of the musical elitism, inthis way these spiritual tunes became an important factor of the pastoral care and preser-vation of the national musical heritage
