Sažetak

Traditional rural garden is influenced by environmental factors as well as by demographic changes and socio-economic circumstances. The same applies to the so called fore-gardens in urban areas which used to be rural.Depopulation process and changes in living habits of the population affect the method of gardens utilisation to a significant extent. They used to be important for farming activities while today they are more important for overall presentation, parking and living functions of the garden/backyard. The village of Krapje is located in the Nature park Lonjsko Polje and it has been designated as a village of construction heritage. Numerous old houses are being renewed with the purpose of preserving of cultural heritage and for tourism. In order to conduct a complete restoration it is also necessary to renew the garden/backyard which requires further research regarding their original appearance, the selection and usage of traditional plants as well as other elements of a traditional backyard such as pathways, fences, garden doors, garden furniture and incorporation of other buildings and their position within the site. The attempt to establish the way of life of the local population in Krapje as it used to be as well as to record the local names for the flower species was made through conducted interviews. The present status of the fore-gardens has been established through field research and inventory of plant species and their taxonomic affiliation. Conducted research shows that traditional gardens are slowly disappearing due to many changes in the way of life. Out of the total number of the surveyed sites, as many as 27% have been neglected, and only 13% utilise their out buildings. The most frequent plant families with the greatest number of species are Asteraceae, Liliaceae, Iridaceae and Amaranthaceae, and only 11.36% of the plant species belong to the autochthonous flora.
