Educational Challenges and Opportunities at the Beginning of the 21st Century. The Example of a Catholic School
Sažetak
The article concerns the challenges and opportunities facing Catholic education and the Catholic school, particularly in Europe. It starts with a review of the relationship between the Church and magisterium toward educational activities, and parental rights and duties in their children's education. After pointing out some specific features of Catholic schools, several contemporary difficulties and problems are discussed, including the promotion of tolerance, mutual understanding and the common good; reduction in the number of schools, students and teachers; socioeconomic discrimination, administrative and curriculum changes; the place and role of the ecclesial community and consecrated persons, and the care of the poor. Today and especially in the future, it will be increasingly necessary to promote the student as a person and active participant in the educational community, the service dimension of the Catholic school in society and the ecclesial community, and a participatory approach. The contemporary Catholic school is an educational institution like any other school, with some specific characteristics. The contemporary Catholic school aspires to be not merely an institution but a community, promoting the ethical aspect of education, stressing the specific roles of the teacher, student and parent; with its own educational project and concrete formative plan.
