Sažetak

The article explores, by following Šagi-Bunić’s intuitions, the conjunction points between the Council of Chalcedon and the Second Vatican Council on the matter of the union between God and the human being. From the perspective of his thoughts on those points which have been left »open« (that is, unresolved and subject to further study) by the Chalcedon’s definition, the author explores their (those points’) influence on the number 22 of the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World Gaudium et Spes. At the same time, the author points out the fact that Šagi-Bunić anticipated this text, which draws implications from the Incarnation of the Son of God for His union with every human being. The article also presents Šagi-Bunić’s postconciliar interpretations of GS 22. By posing the matter in such a way, the author reaches the conclusion that the issue of the union between God and the human being is not only locus communis of both the Chalcedonian (the union between God and the human being as taking-up of a human nature) and the Second Vatican’s (the union between God and the human being as raising-up of every human nature) preoccupation, but that one can also discover this interrelationship in Šagi-Bunić’s opus. This includes his high standard research results on Chalcedon’s Christology as well as his universalist Christological anthropology, identifiable by its specific interpretation of Mt 25:40 according to which the Son of God is united with every human being. In return, this interpretation (that is, the union of the Son of God with every human being) establishes the Christian imperative to recognise and love Christ in each and every human being.
