Sažetak

Having briefly dealt with terminological dilemmas regarding the parallel existence of two terms with the same meaning and function describing interculturalism, the paper deals with an intercultural approach to the teaching of English as a foreign language within formal education. It seems that foreign language, especially English, as a recognized lingua franca in today’s world, is a favourable subject within any school system to initiate and nurture intercultural education. Having in mind that culture is at the heart of language learning, it is impossible to separate culture from second language learning and it can be concluded that foreign language classroom is an excellent setting for the promotion of cultural sensitivity of modern individuals. Consequently, the paper deals with intercultural communicative competence as a desirable outcome of English language learning in schools. It also offers possible practical activities and justification of their use in an English language classroom to promote interculturalism.
