Sažetak
Studies show that the quality of teachers is the single most important factor in the educational success of students. Although future teachers are motivated to choose a profession primarily with intrinsic reasons, however, the heavy workload, low wages, problems with pupils' discipline and negative image of the teaching profession - are the main reasons that could lead to the abandonment of the teaching profession. The conducted research wished to determine which are important motivational factors for the selection of the teaching profession; satisfaction with choice of profession, as well as does the importance of motivational factors satisfaction changes with respect to the year of study. At the end was to check whether motivational factors and satisfaction with studies contribute to explanation of satisfaction with the choice of profession.
The study included 179 students from all five years of the teaching program at the University of Zadar. Students filled the questionnaire factors influencing the choice of the teaching profession (FIT-choice) responded to two questions about satisfaction with their studies as well as satisfaction with the choice of the teaching profession.
The results showed that the most important factors of choice of the teaching profession are the attraction of working with children, the possibility of influencing the future of children and the intrinsic value of teaching and belief that teaching is a difficult job and it requires a high level of expertise. Least important factors are: mobility of occupation, salaries and and other choices, or the fact that for a part of students teaching study was not the first choice. It was also determined that the students are satisfied with the choice of profession and studies. Some motivational factors (work with children, the perception of their own abilities, the influence of others and job security), as well as satisfaction with the choice of profession, show some differences with respect to the year of study, with the main tendency of reporting concerns and the reduction of satisfaction with study in a group of final year students. Finally, we found that some of the motivational factors as well as satisfaction with the study were significant predictors of satisfaction with the choice of the teaching profession.
