Paintings by Ivo Dulčić Describing the National. Costume of Hvar
Mirjana Kolumbić Šćepanović
Sažetak
The authoress describes fifteen hitherto unknown paintings (tempera on paper) that on the basis of stylistic analysis as well as of that of archival sources are here attributed to Ivo Dulčić (1916-1975), outstanding modern Croatian painter who was by origin from the island of Hvar.
These paintings illustrate the national costume of this islands used till the end of the 19th c. and were painted in 1948, at the initiative of Rev. Juraj Dulčić, a Canon of Hvar and an eminent local folklorist, the painter's paternal uncle, who at that time was collaborating with Dr Niko Duboković Nadalini in the research work concerning the traditional dress of the island. The paintings were kept in the personal archives of Rev. Dulčić's, preserved at the Centre for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Island of Hvar (founded by Dr. Duboković). The authoress demonstrates that these paintings are a valuable contribution to our cognition of the work of Ivo Dulčić and modern Croatian painting in general, as well as to the ethno choreology of the island of Hvar.
