Sažetak
Occupational stress is the cause of a wide range of problems and disturbances in the work process and in the social and psychological functioning of workers. Efficient methods for removing the harmful consequences of stress are needed. The paper focuses on occupational stress accentuating some of its characteristics and suggesting certain number of methods for the prevention of stress and for the removal of its harmful effects on workers. Also in focus is the need to address the problem of stress in the workplace more adequately and to promote the positive effects of early identification of the causes of stress thus enabling more efficient methods of prevention to be put into place.
Organisational interventions aimed at preventing stress showed varying levels of benefit. Good results were obtained using those organisational measures that included physical activity at work. However, readily perceived positive results were not obtained in all organisations or for all types of work. Some findings indicate that secondary and tertiary prevention measures may result in greater benefits. Results gathered to date prove beyond doubt a reduction of stress at workplaces with efficient management, where possible stress-generating problems are anticipated and resolved through mutual efforts of the management and the workers.
The complexity of stress at the workplace demands that the matter be incorporated into the overall body of occupational safety measures with the aim of preventing stress. Many sources of stress at work may be ascribed to poor organisation and can be identified, anticipated and prevented. Employers and workers share the responsibility of identifying the causes and signs of stress and finding effective mechanisms for prevention and coping with stress.
