The Medieval Fort of Possert Six Years of Archaeological Works and Conservation-Restoration Interventions on the Preserved Architectonic Structures

Sažetak

The medieval feudal fort of Possert (Shabez), which is located in
the Municipality of Cerovlje, in the vicinity of Belaj, was a site
where the Division for Archaeological Heritage of the Croatian
Conservation Institute performed archaeological explorations
and conservation-restoration interventions in the course of the
last six years. The archaeological excavations performed during
this period resulted in the discovery of many hitherto unknown
architectural details that explain the way in which the fort
functioned, and of a significant amount of movable archaeological
finds, enabling us to date the period when the fort was in service
(15th and 16th century), and at the same time giving us an insight
into everyday life in it. Due to the extremely poor condition of
the preserved architectural elements that make up the fort, we
also had to carry out extensive conservation-restoration works
in this period of time, in order to improve the state of its most
endangered parts and to save it from further deterioration. This
paper brings an analysis of known historical data, an analysis
of fort architecture, and a description of the works that were
performed to date. In addition, it also offers an overview and
an analysis of the collected movable archaeological finds, on the
basis of which we attempted to position Possert in the historical
and social context of the period in which the fort functioned.
