Sažetak
Numerous studies on the population of offenders show that women make significantly fewer offenses than men, especially in relation to violent crimes. The traditional role of women in society includes the idea of women as the weaker sex and the centre of family life, which necessarily reflects on the difference in stigmatization of men and women offenders. Criminological research was for a long time mainly focused on men because women were not considered capable of committing serious offenses. The big difference between male and female offenders gives scope for further exploration of the biological, psychological and sociological factors that influence the commission of a crime. This study was conducted on a sample of women, the perpetrators of criminal acts sentenced to prison, that passed the diagnostic testing at the Centre for Diagnostics in Zagreb, in the period from August 2011 to August 2012. The research is focused on the analysis, synthesis and presentation of psychological and socio demographic characteristics of prisoners, and the types and characteristics of the crimes they committed. The conclusion of the study suggests implications for future research in female crime, and the possible application of the acquired results to its prevention.
