Icing of the sea on the eastern Adriatic coast

Sažetak
Sometimes, during very cold winters with strong and stormy bora wind, icing of the parts of the Croatian shore and shallow sea occurs on northern Adriatic. This phenomena, that is so unusual for Adriatic sea geographical latitudes, occurs occasionaly also on mid Adriatic
area. This paper reveals all authors known cases of the Adriatic icing during bora wind, from the beginning of the 20th century. Photo documented cases are supplemented with meteorological
data. For northern Adriatic Senj port is example, that was iced on 12th of February 1956, and for middle Adriatic, the example is lighthouse Sveti Petar in Makarska that was iced in night between 22nd and 23rd of January 1963. Both locations are illustrated with impressive photos. Furthermore, ability for icing of the sea on southern Croatian Adriatic is dicussed by comparing the climate conditions. Bora wind in both areas (middle and southern Adriatic) can
reach equal intensity, with gust of 45 m/s. Maximum of continous duration of strong bora wind is also equally in both areas: for mid Adriatic (Split) it is 68 hours, and for southern Adriatic (Dubrovnik) 67 hours. Meanwhile, the frequency of stormy bora in Dubrovnik is very small, specially in summer, that is generally worth for the whole Adriatic, specially for southern Adriatic. Along with that climatic characteristic, unfavoruable orography for bura generation
of that part of Croatian coast is discussed, that is also disadvantage of the icing in southern Adriatic.
