BASIS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA

Sažetak
Disposing of radioactive waste is the final stage of nuclear energy usage. It is also one of its most controversial issues.
There is about 53 m^3 of radioactive waste generated in Croatia until now. The radioactive waste in Croatia mainly originates from different industries, medicine and scientific research institutions as well. Additionally, Croatia is to store half of radioactive waste generated at Krško NNP; there is about 2.000 m^3 of radioactive waste accumulated up to now. The solution would be to start constructing a final radioactive waste repository that would be suitably sited, proper insulation applied, and construction according to the advanced technologies. In this way, all safety environment and health related requirements would be fulfilled - the environment be protected throughout the period until the waste activity reached the background level.
Since any solution would include certain spatial, ecological, economic and social consequences, social aspects of siting radioactive waste repository are extremely important. It is therefore necessary for the whole procedure of radioactive waste repository site selection to be conducted not only expertly regarding the technical aspect but open to public discussion as well.
