Sažetak

Hinko Juhn was born in Podgorač near Našice in 1891, in a jewish family of Hungarian-Bohemian origin. He completed the State School of Crafts in Zagreb in 1907, and was a member of the first group of students to enroll at the Sculpture Department of the Higher School of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb. He took his degree in sculpture in 1911, in the class of Professor Robert Frangeš-Mihanović; he continued his studies as a fellow at the Academia Internazionale in Florence, where he also had his first — and only — one-man show. Having returned to his homeland in 1913, Juhn completed a commission to refurbish the chapel at the Brezovica mansion, and, as one of the founders, he took part in the »Spring Salon« exhibitions. In 1918 he goes abroad again, this time to specialize in ceramics at the well-known schools at Behinje and Teplice in Bohemia. He also studied ceramics at Dresden and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. He returned to Zagreb in 1921, and, along with teaching, he successfully took on a number of commissions. Juhn was one of the founders of the »Djelo«, an association to promote arts and crafts. He died at the Srebrnjak Sanatorium in Zagreb in 1940. Research has so far revealed six public works by Juhn, dating from between 1913 and 1938. As the analysis and interpretation of Juhn's public opus have been insufficient, and due to an unfortunate destiny of existing works (devastation, theft, removal), the author of this article has proposed an in-depth analysis of the existing data, its more comprehensive verification and interpretation, and he has also placed new discoveries within an artistic, and spatial and chronological context. The author has added the following works to the opus of Hinko Juhn:
1. The coat-of-arms of the Adolf Mošinski family in the arcades of the Mirogoj cemetery (Juhn is assumed to be a co-author, 1908-11).
2. A balcony frieze showing a Battle with the Amazons at the Zupčić house in Zagreb (1918-29).
3. A Nude with a Raised Hand, sculpture for a fountain at Gvozd in Zagreb (around 1925).
4. A Boy, garden sculpture at Gvozd in Zagreb (1930-32).
5. The Bust of Aleksandar Frelić on the facade of the former Charity Hall (today the Hall of the Retirees) in Klaić Street in Zagreb (around 1939). The newly discovered works broaden the time span in which Hinko Juhn received and completed public commissions — from his student days in 1908-11 till 1939. The so far know works were primarily in relief, and so the new discoveries enrich Juhn's opus with statues and portraits comparable to the best among his achievements.
