Sažetak

A virus was isolated from diseased tomato plants with mild variegation symptoms on leaves. The virus was transmitted to 11 test plants, the symptoms of which are described in detail (Tab. 1). Our virus caused only local symptoms on N. silvestris, N. glutinosa and D. stramonium, and both local and systemic symptoms on Atriplex hortensis, Che- nopodium amaranticolor and Ch. quinoa. On the basis of these symptoms on test plants it was obvious that this isolate was very similar to tomato mosaic virus (M e 1 c h e r s et al. 1940 Klinkowski 1958; Faccioli and Paul 1967; Opel et al. 1969). The investigations of cell inclusions showed that our virus produced hexagonal prisms, but not rounded plates which are also very common among viruses of the tobacco mosaic group (Miličić 1969).
Serological investigations carried out by drop method, agar double- diffusion test, and cross absorption test showed that the investigated virus and the dahlemense strain of tomato mosaic virus (VMR-D) were closely related, but that the investigated virus and the common strain of tobacco mosaic virus (VMD) were distantly related (comp. Tab. 1; Fig. 3, 4).
The facts presented in this paper are the first experimental evidence of the existence of the tomato mosaic virus in Yugoslavia.
