Sažetak

This work is the result of a three-years-long research into the streptomyeetes in the mud of 5 sulphuric hyperthermal waters of Yugoslavia.
The samples of mud and water were taken twice, in summer 1977 and in winter 1978.
The number of streptomycetes in the mud samples of the hyperthermal waters analysed varied from 3500 to 42000 per 1 g of mud. Considering the number of streptomycetes, two main groups of stations could be distinguished: The richer ones (Kosovratska banja and Katlanovska banja) with the mean value of streptomycetes of 30750 per 1 g of mud — and the poorer ones (Ilidža, Ribarska banja and Varaždinske toplice) with the mean value of 4000 per 1 g of mud. The greatest number of streptomycetes per 1 g of mud was found in Kosovratska banja — the hyperthermal water with the biggest concentration of sulphurated hydrogen.
Altogether 21 strains of streptomycetes were isolated. They v/ere all classified into series according to a Gauze system and into morphological groups according to the ISP system. The Albus series was found in all sample stations, although the Lavendulae-Roseus, Fradiae, Fnscus, Roseoviolaceus, Ruber, Nigrescens and Violaceus were not found in any of the hyperthermal waters mentioned. The morphological groups had the most abundant representatives in Flexïbüis (7), Spira (5), Retinaculum- Apertum (5), and Rectus (4).
Only 4 strains reduced Melanin and 13 strains showed the hydrolysis of gelatine. As many as 20 strains destroyed cellulose, while all strains, showed a reduction of nitrate.
The antagonistic effect in its powerful form was expressed in only 5 cases, four of which were the strain of Ribarska banja. Only 2 strains showed the antimicrobial effect on all 5 test-bacteria.
It was ascertained that none of the strains appeared in two or more different hyperthermal waters. Consequently, this indicates that each of the sulphuric hiperthermal waters examined should be analysed and examined as a separate habitat with its specific ecological and other characteristics.
