Sažetak
Modern education must not be focused only on the acquisition of knowledge and mechanical adoption of numerous facts, it must contribute to the development of responsible individuals who will be trained to live in a sustainable world. Therefore, during the formal education, it is necessary to apply the most effective forms of educational activities that will contribute to the development of various skills and attitudes necessary for life and work in a modern society. One possibility is the inclusion of students in various extra-curricular activities in which they are intrinsically motivated, unaffected and unencumbered by fear of failure, i.e. one’s selection of his/her extra-curricular activities is based according to one’s personal preferences, with the aim of deepening their knowledge and spending pleasant and useful time after regular classes. Extracurricular activities in the natural sciences area well complement prescribed school contents, as well as enable further development of different skills and positive attitudes. Therefore, this paper presents an extra-curricular activity “Composting” based on the teaching contents of Biology and it is organized for students of Grade 8 from three elementary schools in Split-Dalmatia County. The beginning of extracurricular activity “Composting” had the same name as an educational program “Participate in Sustainable Development”, made by Association for Nature, Environment and Sustainable Development Sunce from Split. The aim is to show an example of good practice by linking teaching contents and extracurricular activities in order to promote education for sustainable development.
