The effect of 1-methylcyclopropene to physiological processes and quality of fruit after harvesting

Sažetak

Picked fruit should maintain its freshness as longer as possible, have the best possible organoleptic traits and shouldn’t manifest any symptoms of disease and damage. That is not always easy to achieve, but technological procedures that help accomplish this goal have been developed lately. One such procedure is the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). 1-MCP belongs to cyclopropane derivatives and it is used as synthetic plant growth regulator. It is structurally related to natural plant hormone ethylene. 1-MCP is the inhibitor of ethylene activation, which prevents the activity of this hormone of maturation with most of climacteric fruit, but its effect differs in different kinds of fruit. 1-MCP significantly decreases synthesis of ethylene and maintains firmness of apples for a long period of time, whereas the synthesis of ethylene in pears is only slightly decreased or remains unchanged. The application of 1-MCP effectively prevents negative physiological changes during storage of most fruit kinds, but some negative consequences of its usage are also possible. 1-MCP was registered in 2011 in Croatia too, so this paper has the aim to review the most important researches in this area in order to give useful guidelines for its usage.
