INFLUENCE OF CLIMATIC FACTORS ON BIRTH AND WEANING WEIGHTS OF PIGLETS

This investigation was carried out with 33,638 piglets, farrowed from January 1 to December 31,1969 at the Swine Farm of PIK „Sljeme“, Sesvete near Zagreb. Individual body weight of baby pigs was recorded 2ᶯᵈday after partum and then at weaning day - 28ᵗʰ day of lactation. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of environment climatic factors (temperature, rainfalls, air pressure and relative air moisture) on birth weight, weaning weight and losses in piglets. All obtained results were analysed statisticaly per months and quarters. On the basis of these results the fallowing conclusions may be drawn: 1. The different climatic conditions per months have had very significant effect on birth weight of piglets (P < 0,01). 2. The average birth weight of piglets was the highest in animals farrowed during May (1.604 kg), and the lowest in piglets farrowed during October (1.430 kg). 3. The highest birth weights were in piglets farrowed in second quarter of the year (April, May, Jun), and the lowest birth weights recorded in piglets farrowed during first quarter (Januar, Februar, March). 4. The different climatic conditions have had significant effect on weaning weight of piglets per months and qarters of farrowing. 5. The highest weaning weights were obtained during January (6.892 kg) and the lowest during July (5.946 kg). 6. The highest weaning weights were obtained during last quarter of the year (October, November, December), and the lowest ones during third quarter (July, August, September). 7. The highest index of pig's losses was recorded during Jun (132.1) and the lowest one during January (71). B. The highest indexes of pig's surviving were obtained during the first quarter (Januar, Februar, March), and the lowest during third quarter ( July, August, September).
