Sažetak

Environmental themes in textbooks are intended to serve as an aid in the development of environmental awareness and literacy, the main prerequisites of preserving natural and cultural heritage of humanity. The aim of this study was to compare the presence of environmental topics in Nature and Society textbooks from 1st to 4th grade of primary school in the Republic of Croatia with those of the Federal Republic of Germany (Nordrhein – Westfalen County), by applying the content analysis method, with the assumption of a greater and better representation of environmental themes in the textbooks of the Federal Republic of Germany as longtime members of the European Union and the European education policy. Quantitative analysis indicates a significantly smaller number of environmental issues in Nature and Society textbooks in the Republic of Croatia. The quality of treatment of environmental issues was also better in the German textbooks. With regard to students’ activities, the Croatian textbooks prevail in answering the questions from the textbooks, reflecting the passivity of students on the environmental topics, in comparison with a number of practical activities of the students that follow the processing of these topics in German textbooks. Environmental competencies of students that enable them to operate in accordance with environmental awareness are important prerequisites for better tomorrow, further survival and development of life on Earth.
