Sažetak

The District Council and the Manufacturers’ Council of the People’s Committee of the Buje district founded in Umag in 1954 the company “Kvarner” dedicated to shipping, transport and international freight forwarding. The economic boom of the 1950s brought about the development of transport and created a need to develop the transport company “Kvarner” as the only shipping company in Croatian Istria. The company activity was developing along two lines: road transport and maritime transport. The activity was based on the exploitation of ships in local and international traffic to ports of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, transport of good on roads and international freight forwarding for own-account transport and third-party transports. Following an Act which entered into force in 1962 and prescribed that an economic organisation specialised in international sea transport had to have at least five ships, the company “Kvarner” was forced to merge with other forwarding companies. As a result of several failed attempts of merger, the company entered into the liquidation procedure. The People’s Committee of the Municipality of Umag adopted the decision on the closure of the company “Kvarner” from Umag in the meeting of the Municipal Council and Manufacturers’ Council held on 31 December 1962.
