Abstract

The Franciscan priest from the Silver Bosnia province Fra Stjepan Pavić, theologian and classical philologist, professor and translator, is to be credited with the revitalisation of St Anthony’s Monastery in Dubrave, Bosanska Posavina. In the 1980s the church and monastery were reconstructed and the liturgy began to be celebrated again. Then Fra Stjepan Pavić deposited in the place his own collection of artworks and personal library, the intention being that the monastery, although being devoted to primarily liturgical and religious functions,
should also become a centre of cultural life in the region. Today, after thirty years of work, the Franciscan Monastery of St Anthony in Dubrave has turned into a vital religious and cultural centre of the region. Thanks to the work of Fra Stjepan Pavić, an imposing Collection of Contemporary Fine Art is located there, with a Collection of Old Religious Art, an Ethnological Collection, the Augustine Library. A new building has been built for the Šimun Gallery, as well as a new church. Archaeological excavations have been undertaken into a
previously unknown medieval site in the vicinity, today one of the most important in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The whole area has been landscaped. With the numbers and quality of the museum objects and their well-informed presentation, the result of the efforts and enthusiasm of top Croatian experts, a museum unique in its contents, one that lives in the powerful spiritual atmosphere of church and monastery, has been founded.
