Sažetak
The Coleopteran Collection of Dr Eduard Karaman (1849-
1923) in the Natural History Museum in Split is in terms of
contents of inestimable value for science and has all the
characteristics of a historical collection. About one third of
all specimens derive from Croatia (Dalmatia), while other
specimens originated in more than 30 European countries,
which is a spur to the interest of foreign academics. Specimens from the collection were collected or determined
by pioneers in entomology in Europe (from the 19th to the
mid-20th century). Some few specimens more than a century
old were collected at sites long ago built up and are often
the only evidence of the former fauna. The collection also
contains the holotypes of some species, and has a cultural,
educational, academic and tourist potential. The Coleopteran Collection of Dr Eduard Karaman is the first digitised
collection of beetles (Coleoptera) in Croatia. The aim of the
digitisation is to acquire a better insight into the national
cultural heritage and to advance the preservation of and
research into the collection. Experience with the digitisation
of this collection shows that it is necessary to give targeted
support to institutions that find it hard to cope with the
requirements of the digitisation of some of their collections.
