Sažetak

This paper presents the European Union’s and Croatian’s language policy, with particular attention to language education policy, and models of bilingual and plurilingual education in the Republic of Croatia. The purpose of the introduction is to indicate a complexity of defining two main concepts, bilingual and plurilingual education and language policy and planning. The first part of the paper presents the EU’s laws and initiatives relating to the key aspects of its language policy: a protection of linguistic diversity and a promotion of plurilingual education. Furthermore, Croatian legislation that regulates Croatian language policy is presented and some aspects of language planning are discussed as well. The second part of the paper provides a description of the six models of the bilingual and plurilingual education which are currently being organized on the Croatian territory: separatist model, maintenance model, submersion model with mother tongue classes, mainstream model, prestige model and dynamic model. In conclusion some guidelines are proposed which could contribute both to the harmonization of the Croatian language policy with the European one and to the better language planning.
