Sažetak

Situated between the peninsula of Istria and the Velebit range of mountains, the Kvarner area stretches on some 3,246 km² and, according to the data available for 1991, it has 309,759 inhabitants.
The demographic map (which is always subject to space and time alterations) shows a relatively low rate of natural movement as well as a diversity in the structure of population tending towards concentration in the urban areas. The general characteristics of the Kvarner area may be reduced to the following: the population is mostly middle-aged, the prevailing nationality is Croatian, the tertial sector of activities tends to absorbe the majority of active inhabitants, rural areas record a downward curve while the number of inhabitants in the urban areas is on the increase, which reveals an upward trend of the degree of urbanization.
