The relation of social support and burnout among students

Burnout refers to a set of symptoms that occur in situations of prolonged stress in the workplace, which is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced efficacy. In the past decade researchers’ interest focused on burnout among students, whose involvement in the attendance of lectures, exams and performance of different specific tasks can be considered as a form of work . The aim of this study was to examine the relation of social support and dimensions of burnout in male and female students of Faculty of Medicine in University of Mostar, from the first to the sixth year of study (N = 107). Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey was used to examine burnout among students, Social support questionnaire to examine social support, and demographic questionnaire was constructed for this study. The results showed that the participants have a moderate level of exhaustion, cynicism and academic efficacy. It was found that academic efficacy is significantly positively associated with social support. Regarding the relation between socio-demographic variables and dimesions of burnout, gender was significantly associated with the academic efficacy, year of study is associated with cynicism, and the average score is associated with exhaustion, cynicism and academic efficacy. In addition, statistically significant difference was found between men and women in the academic efficacy and social support, where women had higher scores on both.
