Displacing the Orenda: The Orenda by Joseph Boyden

Sažetak
The Orenda by Canadian author Joseph Boyden was the 2014 winner of Canada Reads under the topic “One Novel to Change Our Nation.” Although Boyden's native origin has been debated recently, his works deal primarily with indigenous issues, so that in December of 2015 he was nominated a member of the Order of Canada because of his contribution to the preservation of Canadian cultural heritage. The Orenda explores the early encounters between the natives and the European settlers in Canada, while focusing on the experience of the French Jesuit missionaries among the Hurons, and, in particular, on the character and achievement of the canonized Jean de Brébeuf. Therefore, apart from approaching the novel from literary and cultural perspectives, this article relies on several historical sources, such as the original Jesuits' reports, the work of nineteenth-century positivist historian Francis Parkman from 1865, and the interpretation of the same problem by contemporary postcolonial critic Carole Blackburn from 2000. Although the Jesuits' reports are taken as a testimony whose character is close to that of a primary source, their contents are equally corrupted by their distinct purpose and then edited twice on their way from the authors to the readers. Concurrently, while our reading of the novel is based on historical sources, we largely miss the authentic native voice.
