Sažetak

Originally a part of a more extensive doctoral
thesis, this paper off ers basic medical defi nitions
of blindness and visual impairment, aiming to
set them in appropriate context in relation to
art practice, and then continuing with a shorter
review of the treatment that blindness and
visual impairment receive in linguistics and
artistic performance, especially fi lm and video,
underlining the stereotyped handling of the issue
in question, which eventually entails negative
perception of blind and visually impaired2
population in the eyes of wider society. The fi rst
part of the paper ends by citing examples of
artistic, healthcare, scientifi c and social activities
that blind and visually impaired people participate
in and explains domination of the visual aspect
in art, followed by an overview of how the
blind and visually impaired acquired knowledge
and education through history. Tracking the
development of technology that has facilitated
their life in diff erent aspects (motion and mobility,
education, basic and technological literacy), the
author includes concrete examples of modern
computer and technological applications and the
possibility of their use in actual art and theatre
practice, not only referring to the experiences of
blind and visually impaired people, but also to
the records written by world renowned theatre
professionals.
