Sažetak

Introduction: The paper aims to show the health benefits of walking as a significant factor contributing
to a health lifestyle. In medical rehabilitation centres, walking has been a traditional activity for more
than a hundred years. The Lipik gardens have are many walkways with unique covered promenades. A
significant number of chronically non-infection diseases can be prevented by reducing risk factors of
which one is insufficient physical activity.
Aim of the paper: Point out the health benefits of walking as a factor contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Materials and methods: The paper is based on empirical (1983-2011) and research (2007-2015) work
by the authors and data from literature. Bibliographic-speculative method.
Results and a discussion: The World Health Organisation has declared the first decade of the twenty-
first century as the “Bone and Joint Decade” which due to its exceptional importance has been extended
into the next decade (2011-2020) under the slogan of “Encouraging Movement”.
Movement contributes to reducing obesity, the regulation of hypertension and sugar levels in blood,

changes the relationship between the particular components of fat in blood and other factors involving
coagulation, better circulation, reduction of stress, maintaining bone density during ageing, the toning of
muscles, improving neuromuscular coordination, prevention of falls and breaks.
The baths physician at Lipik, Dr Hinko Kern, asserted in 1877 that “Walking in fresh air improves the
action of iodine water, and it is especially good to take a walk in the morning, leading to the better absorption
of mineral water.” There is a park in Lipik with numerous walkways. In 1892, a covered walkway
called the “Wandelbahn” was constructed, with a length of 100m, for walks during unfavourable
weather conditions. The spas are important for encouraging physical activity, and along with hydro-kinesiotherapy,
the walks in the part are important.
The recommendation for walks during therapy and prevention purposes is to go for a 30-minute walk
everyday, or 60-minute walks 3 times a week, with an appropriate intensity, as determined for the individual.
Conclusion: Traditional walks are justifiably included among the factors contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
