ENGAGEMENT OF CIVILIAN AND MILITARY SECURITY TEAMS IN THE FUNCTION OF PIRATE PROTECTION ALONG THE SOMALIA’S COASTLINE

Sažetak
The modern piracy on Somalia’s coastline is appeared as a result of the inability of the coastal state to prevent armed robbery at sea. This has resulted in the engagement of international actors at all levels and the establishment a series of measures and activities aimed to ensure the safety of navigation, ships protection and preventing pirate activities. Apart from series of defferent anti-piracy activities, has been established a system of protection by boarding and engagement of civilian and military teams for protection known as engagement of Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel and Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment. This paper is presented the specificity of modern piracy on Somalia’s coastline, the legal framework was explored and the possibility of engaging Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel and Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment along the coast of Somalia. The analysis of the current engagement provides a cross-section of the effectiveness of ship protection and the fight against piracy. By systematic analysis it has been come to the conclusion that this kind of protection is effective in providing current protection by deterring but at the same time can not be considered as a long-term solution to the fight against piracy.
