Sažetak

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of using corn biofortified with different levels of selenium in mixtures for laying hens on egg quality and increase of selenium content in eggs. The trial period lasted 4 months. The experiment was carried out on 45 hens of Hrvatica breed (red strain), divided into three groups (A, C and D). Hens in group A represented the control group and consumed feed mixtures of commercial composition, while hens in groups C and D consumed feed mixtures in which maize was biofortified with selenium at two levels (lower and higher selenium levels; 0.2 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg feed mixtures). Analysis of results has shown that corn biofortified with a lower selenium level in mixtures for hens could replace the selenium that is added to the premix. The use of maize biofortified with higher selenium level in feed of Hrvatica breed hens significantly increases the selenium content in edible part of egg (P <0.001) and positively affects egg quality indicators (HU, albumen height, yolk color, pH values of albumen and yolk; P<0.05).
