Sažetak

Tonsillopharynitis indicates various inflammatory processes in the throat, which affect Waldeyer’s lymphatic ring. They are most commonly caused by viruses, including adenoviruses, enteroviruses and rhinoviruses. Beta hemolytic streptococci of group A (BHS-A) are the only significant causative agents in daily practice. In accordance with ISKRA guidelines, penicillin is the first choice in the treatment of streptococcal tonsillopharynitis with never-observed BHS-A resistance. The aim of our study was to compare the selected antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of streptococcal tonsillopharynitis with recommended therapy in ISKRA Guidelines for sore throat.
A retrospective, cross-sectional study of treating methods for streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis in general/family medicine at the Split-Dalmatian County Health Center was conducted in the period from January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2016.
The study included 53 (75.7%) GPs in general/family practices of which 42 (79.2%) women and 11 (20.8%) men. The most prominent antibiotic was amoxicillin with clavulanic acid which was prescribed in 34.4% cases, followed by amoxicillin in 20% and azithromycin in 17.8% cases. Penicillin antibiotics were on the forth place and were prescribed in 14.5% of cases.
The results of our research indicate that respondents do not prescribe antibiotics according to recommendation. Irregular prescribing of antibiotics is the main cause of the increased bacterial resistance at world level. GPs prescribe most antibiotics and therefore it is important to follow the guidelines in everyday practice.
