Sažetak

An unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are the leading risk factors for the development of many chronic non-communicable diseases in the general population as well as in the working population. The aim of this study was to determine physical activity habits among 200 workers aged 20-57 years divided according to occupational physical activity level, one hundred sedentary and one hundred non-sedentary workers, and to evaluate their diet quality using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). During health examinations, the participants underwent body anthropometric measurements and noted their leisure time physical activity type and intensity data. The participants’ FFQ diet quality was assessed and evaluated by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). This study showed that most of the workers were very active at leisure time, indicating physical activity habits improvement compared to previous Croatian studies. Younger workers were more and intensively physically active. Based on the occupation type, non-sedentary workers spent significantly more time and with more intensity doing physical activity at their leisure time than sedentary workers. None of the participants had a “good” diet, while most then had a diet that “needs improvement” (74%). Non-sedentary workers had a slightly better diet quality as they ate more food, reaching recommended intakes for fruit and vegetables. The workplace represented an ideal place for healthy diet promotion since people spent most of their day in that environment. The study results showed a need for public health nutrition programs for increasing workers’ efficiency and health, but aimed more to younger workers designed as diet-physical activity promotion messages.
