Sažetak
Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a critical role in a number of functions in the body that affect muscle function such as energy production and electrolyte balance. Given its role in maintaining normal muscle function and blood glucose level, magnesium is being studied as a potential ergogenic aid. Physical activity and magnesium are interrelated – physical activity regulates magnesium distribution and utilization, whereas magnesium improves strength and supports cardiovascular function. Due to increased magnesium needs, and often due to inadequate dietary intake, physically active individuals and athletes are at risk of magnesium deficiency. Research has shown that physically active individuals, regardless of their age, with inadequate magnesium status can benefit from magnesium supplementation, as this element directly affects functional performance during exercise, whether aerobic or anaerobic.
