Potato seed production at the Institute for potato Stara Sušica

Sažetak
Institute for Potato Stara Sušica was founded in year 1984, encouraged by prof. dr. sc. Marko Mohaček. Institute for Potato Stara Sušica was a part of Bc Institute and Faculty of Agriculture Zagreb and now we are independent company. Through 55 years we were working on selection, introduction and seed production of potato. Most of introduced potato cultivars through past were introduced by this institute. In institute there were created 8 cultivars (Lika, Goran, Istra, Stanka, Dalmatinka, Nada, Dobra i Biserka).
From 1975 until 1985 we were organizing potato seed production from 185 t until 5,000 t, and we have storage capacity for 8,000 t of seed potato. Institute for Potato was between first one in Croatia who were dealing with biotechnology. We are working with
technology of micro propagation and tissue culture and producing virus free tubers in laboratory and greenhouse. We have basis for production of pedigree and plant breeder seed. We have good collaboration with main companies for potato in Europe (Nizozemska, Danska, Poljska, Češka, Mađarska etc.). Potato seed production is one of most complicated seed productions and import slows down our own production.
