Application of autochthonous plant species in urban landscape

Sažetak

In traditional urban landscaping the use of a relatively small number of plant species was common for a long time. New trends indicate a possible use of autochthonous plant species even in representative urban green areas by imitating natural vegetation layout. Autochthonous plant species adapt better to the site conditions and the maintenance costs are lower. By the use of native species, biological and landscape diversity is preserved, which is very important especially if the species are endangered or protected in their natural habitats.
Such species is Ruscus hypoglossum L., endangered in most of its natural habitats because it is collected by florists and used as greenery for flower arrangements. It is a highly ornamental species suitable for planting in shaded places in gardens as well as in urban green areas.
