Sažetak

An attempt was made to establish the influence of personality structure on performance in volleyball. The investigation was carried out on 54 students of the Faculty of Physical Education whose level of players was equivalent to the standard of the interborough volleyball league. Two sets of criterial variables of volleyball performance were employed for this purpose.
The first set of criterial variables comprised seven situational-motoric abilities of volleyball players:
- precision of hitting and passing the ball with the fingers (PPR)
- precision of hitting and passing the ball with the forearm (PPD)
- precision of serving (PSR)
- precision of smashing (PSM)
- power with which the ball is hit (SOD)
- speed endurance of volleyball players (IZD)
- speed of movement of volleyball players (BKR)
The second of criterial variables consisted of evaluations of eight aspects of the game:
- technical efficacy (TEHNIK)
- performance in attack (NAPAD)
- performance in defence (OBRANA)
- creativity (STVARA)
- responsibility (ODGOVO)
- commitment (ANGAZI)
- behaviour (PONASA)
- overall performance (OPCOCJ).
The predictive set of personality variables included evaluations of the following personality factors:
- efficiency of the system for regulation and control of defensive reactions
- efficiency of the system for regulation and control of attack reactions
- efficiency of the system for regulation and control of organic functions
-efficiency of the system of homeostatic regulation
- efficiency of the system for integration of regulative functions
- efficiency of the system for regulation of activity.
The correlation between personality factors and each of the sets of criterial variables was determined by the quasicanonical correlation analysis and the SRA regression analysis.
The personality structure that is especially favourable for the precision and coordination of movements required in motoric activities typical of volleyball if defined by a good regulation of all conative mechanisms, especially the system for regulation and control of defensive reactions, and regulation and control of organic functions. The conative structure that is important for the regulation of power in the performance of motoric tasks typical of volleyball is defined by cortical control activity.
The conative mechanism that is dominant in its significance for performance in volleyball, regardless of how this is evaluated, is the mechanism for regulation of activity. Good performance in volleyball requires the inhibitory part of the distribution of this mechanisms to be overcome, that is a lower level of activity, together with a considerable efficiency of the system of homeostatic regulation. With such a level of control of activity it is easier to lessen the influence of unimportant information and to maintain full concentration over longer periods which , in fact, fulfills the requirements of the game of volleyball.
