Sažetak
This article provides an analysis of a manuscript fragment containing the tractates of St Augustine on the Gospel of John (MS. 950), written in Beneventan script and acquired for Dubrovnik Libraries at an auction at Sotheby’s in 2012, arguments for its dating to the thirteenth century and its possible Dubrovnik origin.
The study of Beneventan script in Dubrovnik in the thirteenth century is facilitated by the fact that there are two manuscripts from the thirteenth century (the so-called Missale Ragusinum, MS. Canon. Liturg. 342, Oxford, Bodleian Library; Libellus S. Nicolayi, Dubrovnik, Archives of the Diocese of Dubrovnik), in addition to Beneventan fragments kept in the collection of the Musée Condée in Chantilly (Impr. Fol. V. A. 8) and in the University Library in Graz (MS. 1703), whose Dubrovnik origin has already been confirmed by earlier scholars. Also submitted are the palaeographic arguments for the dating of the manuscript Libellus s. Nicolayi to the thirteenth century, an outline of palaeographic features of the fragments from Chantilly and Graz, along with a survey of the characteristics of Beneventan script used in Dubrovnik in the thirteenth century. The aforementioned manuscripts and fragments testify to the fact that in thirteenth-century Dubrovnik Beneventan script with pronounced angularity was used, most probably under the influence of the contemporary Gothic script. The letters are not placed directly on the base line, thus creating an irregular appearance. Also evident is an inconsistency in the use of standard Beneventan punctuation which is mainly confined to points. The scribes use abbreviations typical of the thirteenth century although the manuscripts display a simultaneous usage of old and recent abbreviation system for omnis, omnia, which indicates the conservative characteristics of the Beneventan used in Dalmatia. The script also possesses certain features of the round Beneventan used in Dalmatia in the eleventh century, such as the ligature “fi” not descending below the base line and relatively short strokes with the letters of ascending and descending lines.
Presented is the comparative analysis of the Beneventan fragments from Dubrovnik collections (Dubrovnik Libraries, Franciscan Monastery of the Friars Minor, Scientific Library of Juraj Habdelić in Zagreb which holds two books from the Jesuit Monastery in Dubrovnik) whose general features most closely resemble the fragment MS. 950 from the Scientific Library. Based on the identification of the text of the Beneventan fragments from the Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik, kept in the manuscript under shelfmark MS. 463, as
well as on the comparison with fragment MS. 950 from the Scientific Library, the author comes forward with a thesis that these fragments are the membra disiecta of the same manuscript containing the tractates ofSt Augustine on the Gospel of John of Dubrovnik origin.
