Sažetak
Between 1986 and 1988, immediately before the sulphurous water of Splitske toplice ceased to be used for medicinal purposes, research was carried out to discover how the chemical composition of the water is affected by the varying influx of seawater and rainwater. Since the sulphurous water normally consists of about 80% seawater and 20% fresh water, its composition is very similar to the seawater. However, it has a somewhat lower mineral content and contains hydrogen sulphide. The more copious precipitation during winter and early spring alters the relative proportions of seawater and fresh water. The spring water is diluted and contains a lower proportion of chlorides and other minerals. Its temperature falls, and the hydrogen sulphide content is also much reduced. After a long spell of dry weather, and when the sea-level is low, the spring sometimes ceases to flow. During dry periods the spring typically produces about one fifth of its average flow and consists mainly of hydro-carbonated underground water from the karst. This contradicts the view which Buljan expounded in 1955, that the sulphurous water consists of seawater and mineral sulphurous water.
