Sažetak

The purpose of this research was to determine homogeneous groups of runners on the basis of motor and functional-biomechanical characteristics. The subjects were top Yugoslav distance runners, aged 16 to 33 years, with 1 to 18 years of competition period. The following motor characteristics were taken:
- 30 m flying sart run,
- 400 m run,
-12 minutes Cooper run, and 2 biomechanical variables were determined:
- pH quantity after 400 m run
- acidosis treshold.
Taxonomic analysis was done according to the algorithm TAXONOM, included in the statistical package SS MACRO. Two independent latent taxonomic dimensions were determined. They discriminated runners according to the efficiency of anaerobic metabolic functions, to the speed of running, gross fitness and to the competition quality.
The analysis of runners, who define the poles of the first taxonomic variable best, showed the following: one pole of this dimension was represented by very fast and less endurable runners, able to meet specific requests of 800 m run. The second pole of this dimension was represented by slow, but very endurable runners, determining model characteristics for long distance run.
The second taxonomic dimension was represented by runners with uniformely developed aerobic as well as anaerobic abilities or, in another way, with propertionally developed seed and basic endurance. Such running fitness is characteristic for middle distance runners (1500 to 5000 m).
The second taxonomic dimension discriminated efficient runners from les efficient ones.
