Sažetak
This paper discusses Fort Lopar in Novi Vinodolski, once used as a crucial strategic position from the late antique period, when the Byzantine Emperor Justinian was reconstructing earlier known forts or erecting new ones to defend shipping lanes to Italy. Fort Lopar is but one such structure in a system of such fortifications in the entire Adriatic and the neighbouring countries. The finds discovered during seven years of archaeological research (from 2011 to 2017) at this site are typical of the late antique and mediaeval periods, also often unearthed at other locations similar in function, purpose and dating. Mainly ceramic vessels have been found, as well as other pottery, metal, glass, stone and bone finds. Since the archaeolo- gical layers were markedly churned up, precise dating of stratigraphic units proved to be demanding, but the stratigraphic situation of the site will surely improve with further research.
