Abstract

Around the mid-nineteenth century, the German architect and theorist Gottfried Semper created a uniquely complex architectural theory, a sort of precise "science of architecture", with the aim of enabling the production of truly authentic works of art. This essay investigates complex operations, as well as inevitable problems, involved in creation of such a broad symbolic system. As a main conceptual tool of analysis, the paper uses basic theoretical implications of Ludwig Wittgenstein's model theory of language, suggesting at once a certain compatibility between the two respective theories.
