The first nurses in health care institutions in Karlovac

Sažetak
Introduction: After the founding of the School for Assistant Nurses in Zagreb in 1921, when nuns and civilian students enrolled in the school, assistant nurses and nurses began to be employed in social and health institutions along with support staff. In the period after World War II, many nuns were forced to leave the service because they refused to work in the civilian department or were exposed to pressure in the workplace. The first nurses were employed in Karlovac in the 1940s and 1950s in inpatient and outpatient health care facilities. Based on the insight into the historical materials, we attempted to reconstruct data on their work and education.
Methods: The starting point for this work were documents stored in the archives of the Karlovac General Hospital, the archives and collections of the Croatian State Archives (HDA), and the State Archives in Karlovac (DAKA). In addition to these sources, we also used previously published papers.
Results: Reconstruction of the course of education and work of following nurses was made: Rozalija Špoljarić, Sofija (Sonja) Škrobe, Anica (Zibar) Radmanović, Marica (Marija) Brajdić, Ankica (Mušnjak) Slavnić, Zdenka Čačić and Zorka Lasić. Based on the insight into the archives, we can conclude that the first educated nurse in Karlovac was Sofija (Sonja) Škrobe.
Conclusion: Since the work and activities of nurses in Karlovac health care institutions have not been systematically recorded and researched so far, the authors believe that further work in this area may result in finding additional information and possibly different conclusions.
